On the occasion of World Water Day 2024, Amrita School for Sustainable Futures along with the UNESCO Chair on Experiential Learning for Sustainable Innovation and Development has launched Wave of Change: Water for a Sustainable Future, a month-long initiative aimed at empowering communities for water sustainability.
The initiative was launched in Kallikkadu, Alapuzha, Kerala on March 22. The event was inaugurated by Vice President of Alappuzha Municipality, Sheeb Mansoor, at Ward 14 in Kallikkadu. Saju Prakash, Ward Member, Vandana V., Coordinator of Amrita Shree Cluster. Faculty members of ASF including Prof. Vinod P.T., Dr. P. Raji, Dr. Sajith Kumar, Dr. Shruthi and PhD scholars in the area of Water Sustainabilty were present and actively engaged in the discussions.
Around 150 women residents actively participated in the program, which shed light on various aspects of water conservation, including rainwater harvesting and reuse of water resources. Experts conducted sessions on how to conserve water sources and effectively utilize rainwater and waterways. The program also emphasized the importance of monitoring daily water usage at homes as part of the awareness campaign.
The initiative is designed to empower communities to become proactive stewards of their water resources. By educating individuals on the importance of water conservation and highlighting effective practices such as rainwater harvesting and the reuse of water resources, the program seeks to instill a culture of responsible water usage.
A key component of the initiative is the identification and training of “water champions” within the community. Through multiple assessments conducted by water experts at the university, individuals with a passion for water sustainability are identified and equipped with the knowledge and skills to lead their communities towards a more sustainable future.
These water champions play a pivotal role in the initiative, serving as ambassadors for change within their communities. Through training and engagement efforts, they empower fellow community members to adopt water-wise practices, ensuring the long-term sustainability of water resources.
“Wave of Change” initiative aims to not only raise awareness about water conservation but also to catalyse tangible action within communities. By nurturing a network of informed and motivated individuals committed to water sustainability, the initiative aims to create a ripple effect that extends far beyond its duration. Similar awareness sessions along with training and certification programs are planned to be conducted across 108 communities across India in the upcoming days.
As part of the month-long initiative, a distinguished lecture series has also been launched showcasing eminent global experts in the area of water sustainability. The series kicked off on March 22nd featuring Dr. Prof. Miroslav Cernik, Director of CXI, Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic.
