University of Madras emerged victorious in the South Zone Inter-University Football (Men) Tournament hosted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore campus from December 10-19, 2015.
Calicut University, Annamalai University and Anna University secured second, third and fourth places respectively after a round-robin round, which saw the top four teams play each other. The University of Madras also won the Fair Play award.Dr. Sasangan Ramanathan, Dean, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Dr. K. Sankaran, Registrar, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham distributed prizes to the winners of the South Zone Inter University Football Tournament.
Ninety one universities with 1820 players, 250 Team Managers, Coaches and Officials from 6 states viz., Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry participated in this tournament. Host Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham reached the quarterfinals and matched their best performance in football in the inter-university tournaments. All the participating teams greatly appreciated the excellent organization of this tournament by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has made elaborate arrangements for 4 football fields at the Coimbatore campus. This is the third South Zone Inter-university tournament organized by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham; earlier Amrita had organized table tennis and chess tournaments.
