The 16th Annual Sports Day at the Coimbatore campus was organized on February 24, 2011. Anushree Madhavan, from the School of Communication, reports.
Students of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore campus welcomed Commodore Amar Singh Baghel, commanding officer of the INS Agrani as Chief Guest for the Annual Sports Day.
The event began with a march-past by students of all four houses – Anandamayi, Amritamayi, Chinmayi and Jyothirmayi. As students marched past, the Chief Guest stood, taking the salute.
After the sports torch was lit, Prof. Chinnaswami, Students Welfare Officer welcomed the participants.
“We wish to see that the youth of today have a wholesome personality,” he said to participants. “Students of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham should be balanced in all ways.”
The Annual Sports Report was read out by Mr. O.J. Kumaresan, Director of Physical Education at the campus.
“The carpet for the sports day was laid out in the third week of January when intra-house competitions began,” he said.
“These competitions saw the clash between Amrita champions in throwball, basketball and volleyball. Athletic field events were conducted during mornings and evenings and included shot put, marathon, long jump, etc. Indoor events included chess and caroms.”
“In total, there were 11 games for girls and 14 for boys.
Mr. Kumaresan also noted inter-campus successes of the Coimbatore team.
Next, athletic field events that were not already conducted, got underway. This was preceded with the captains, vice captains and general captains of all four houses taking the sports oath.
Clad in blue jerseys and tracks, they went up, one after another, with pride in their eyes, to renew their commitment to the 3Ds of determination, dedication and discipline.
Annual Sports Day 2011 came to an end with the 100 m dash for girls 4×100 m relay.
The house Chinmayi emerged victorious with Amritamayi as runners-up. Prize distribution by the Chief Guest marked the successful end of the event.
