Sports Activities at Amritapuri Campus

The past few weeks saw a major display of student talent as the Annual Sports Meets of the four schools at the Amritapuri campus got underway.
 

Sports Day
 

First to be conducted was the Sports Meet of the School of Engineering. Students participated in individual events including sprint, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus throw, javelin throw and hammer throw.
 

Based on results from these competitions, the Chinmayi house lifted the overall championship, with Jyotirmayi coming in second place.
 

Athul M. V, a final-year EEE student, and Rohini R., a second-year CSE student, won several prizes and were duly honored for their achievements.
 

Sports Day
 

The occasion also saw the famous boxer B. Chandra Lal, winner of the 2007 Dronacharya Award, encourage the students. He was invited as the Chief Guest at the inauguration of the Sports Meet.
 

“I am very glad to be here and I wish you all success,” he said, speaking to the athletes.
 

Sports Meets of the Schools of Arts & Sciences, Ayurveda and Biotechnology followed next, where again winners were honored and all participants were felicitated.
 

Sports Day
 

Sports activities will continue this semester as other inter-campus and intra-campus tournaments are now organized.
 

The beginning of this semester was also marked by a major activity coordinated by the Department of Physical Education.
 

An insightful seminar on Health Science & Modern Techniques in Sports Training, conducted during January 8-9, 2011, attracted many participants from all over South India.
 

Suresh 's talk
 

The conference sought to provide updated knowledge in the area of physical education to all participants, many of them trainers.
 

“As coaches, we should not be too focused on results. Our focus should be on performance to bring back the game to our side. This can ensure a good result also,” stated Dr. Suresh Kutty of the School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Kannur University, during his lecture on sports psychology.
 

A practical session on aerobics by Dr. Usha S. Nair, a well known faculty member of Lakshmi Bhai National College for Physical Education was followed by a talk on hypokinetic diseases by Dr. T. I. Manoj from Kerala Agricultural University, Trivandrum.

An insightful discussion on Sports Medicine and After Effects of Increasing Usage of Mobile Phones, brought the series of lectures to an end.
