Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham hosts a South Zone Inter-University Football (Men) Tournament from December 10-19, 2015 at its Coimbatore campus.
91 universities with 1820 players, 250 Team Managers, Coaches and Officials from 6 states viz., Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry are participating in the tournament. This prestigious tournament is assigned by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
The matches are being held in 4 pools and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has made elaborate arrangements in 4 football fields at the campus.

The tournament was inaugurated by Shri T.K. Chathunny, N.I.S, a seasoned former international football player and coach with over 50 years of service to the game of football. Chathunny has been part of the Indian national team and played for Services, Goa and Maharashtra in the Santhosh Trophy. As a coach, Chathunny has been at the helm of affairs of leading football clubs like Mohun Bagan, Salgoacar, Churcill Brothers, Dempo, FC Cochin,etc.
In his address, Chathunny bemoaned the sorry state of affairs of Indian football as the national football team is at 172nd rank in the FIFA rankings. He exhorted the youth to play with sportsman spirit and strive hard to contribute their bit to improve this situation.
Dr. K. Sankaran, Registrar, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham presided over the inaugural ceremony. Dr. Sasangan Ramanathan, Dean, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham welcomed the gathering and requested all participants to observe fair play and enjoy the game. Dr. O.J. Kumaresan, Physical Education Director, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore proposed the vote of thanks.
This is the third South Zone Inter-university tournament organized by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham; earlier the institution had organized table tennis and chess tournaments.
