School of Pharmacy, Kochi
The Amrita School of Pharmacy organized a one day national seminar on ‘Spectral Analysis in Pharmaceutical Research’ on March 22, 2010.
These days spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques are used for the isolation, identification, separation and characterization of active principles in herbal medicine. The seminar included novel and innovative techniques for analytical and instrumental inspection.
The program was inaugurated by Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Jacob Philip, Director, Sophisticated Test and Instrumentation Centre (STIC), Kochi.
Apart from faculty and students of different departments in Amrita, the seminar also drew dozens of delegates from in and around the state.
Scientific sessions were taught by different experts. These included the following –
– Interpretation in Mass Spectroscopy by Dr. S. Ravi, (Head of Department of Chemistry, Karpagam University, Coimbatore)
– Role of HPTLC in Herbal Drug Analysis by Dr. S.P. Dhanabal (Head of Department of Phyto Pharmacy and Phytomedicine, JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty)
– Seeing the Invisible in NMR Spectroscopy by Dr. Prasanna Ramani (Asst. Professor, Dept. of Chemistry, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore )
– IR Spectral Interpretation: A Promising Technique for Structure Determination by Dr. P. Manoj, (Asst. Professor, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Paramedical Sciences, Coimbatore)
These scientific sessions elaborated on topics such as Chromatographic Techniques, Interpretation of Infra Red (IR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mass Spectroscopy.
In addition to scientific sessions, poster presentations were also organized. Posters were presented by nearly 30 delegates.
“The main objective of the seminar was three-fold,” the organizers stated. “We wanted to give faculty and students a strong introduction to the basic principles and elementary instrumental methods of IR, NMR and mass spectro-photometry.”
“In addition, we wanted them to gain an understanding of the various strategies and information on how to translate and interpret spectra into important structures. Finally, we wanted to hone the students’ problem-solving abilities by providing various spectral problems.”
