On June 27, 2009, the Departments of Radiology and Cardiology at the Amrita School of Medicine will jointly organize a one-day seminar on Cardiac MRI (CMR). Leading the proceedings will be Dr. Boban Thomas, cardiologist and a leading CMR specialist from the National Health Services in Portugal. Dr. Boban will be joined by radiologists, Dr. Elizabeth Joseph from CMC Vellore, Dr. Gurpreet Singh Gulati from AIIMS Delhi and Dr. Sanjaya Viswamitra from Cauvery Medical Center, Bangalore. The latter has trained in the US and also has a background in nuclear medicine.
Cardiac MRI is an emerging modality that promises comprehensive cardiac evaluation without the use of radiation and in a non-invasive manner. A relatively new field that is only just opening its doors to the medical world, it may perhaps be the way of the future; many more lives can be saved with this new technology.
The seminar will address questions of interest to cardiologists, radiologists and general physicians. Scanning techniques and their practical applications in ischaemic heart disease, congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathies, pericardial disease and electro-physiological abnormalities will be covered. In addition, the seminar will elaborate upon standards in CMR and also what is practically possible today. (See brochure for more info).
The Medical Imaging Centre at Amrita is regarded as one of the finest centers of its kind in the world. The Center has high-performance equipment and a hospital-wide all-digital imaging archival and retrieval system. Procedures that use the imaging equipment help reduce duration of hospital stay and costs and often the need for major surgery. With CMR training, the Center should be able to provide many more value-added services to the Department of Cardiology as well. This Department annually serves approximately 10,000 cardiovascular patients.
