A Panel Discussion on the Union Budget after the Budget is presented in the Parliament every year is a flagship event of Amrita School of Business, Bengaluru. This year the event was held on 17th March, 2016, at Amrita School of Business, Bengaluru Campus. The first year MBA-MS students produced a document on the critical review of Union Budget which was published during the event. Dr. Govinda Rao, Member 14th Finance Commission and Emeritus Professor NIPFP, New Delhi; Dr. Ravindran, MD- Max Wealth India Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. Vijai Jayaram, Senior Manager, Deloitte, were members of the panel.
After a team of students presented the highlights of the Economic Survey of India and the Union Budget 2016- 17 as a prelude for discussion, the panelists presented their views on the Budget. Dr. Govinda Rao, while speaking on the macroeconomic perspectives of the implications of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s budget felt that the Budget lacked clear direction and meeting the promises made on fiscal deficit and growth could be a challenge in reality. Mr. Vijai Jayaram spoke from the corporate tax perspective and felt that the government failed to deliver the expectations of the corporate sector on incentives through tax reductions and exemptions. The first year students vibrantly participated in the discussion and raised questions which were well addressed by the panelists.
