A series of four workshops, sponsored by the Directorate General of Health Services of Kerala State, commenced at the Amrita College of Nursing on February 21, 2011. The workshops meant for the development of nursing services in Kerala will each last for a period of seven days.Participants in the first workshop, now ongoing, include nursing superintendents, nursing supervisors and staff nurses from various district government hospitals of the state.Some came from as far as Pathanamthitta and Wynaad.
Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, inaugurated this first workshop titled Management Techniques for Nurse Managers.
He congratulated the faculty and staff at the College of Nursing for taking the initiative to conduct this series of educational workshops.
Sr. Visalakshi P., Deputy Nursing Officer at Amrita, also spoke.
“Today’s consumers of health care services are very much aware of patient rights and consumer protection services,” she stated.
“Hence, in order to render high-quality nursing care, it is important for the nurse manager to refine managerial skills; these workshops will help them do this.”
The workshop is covering modules on various topics including hospital administration, job description and job specifications of nursing staff, leadership, stress management in nursing, the importance of communication and interpersonal relationships in nursing management.
“The sessions are remarkable,” stated a participant. “I am eagerly awaiting the next workshop.”
Forthcoming workshops shall cover subjects such as planning and organization of nursing services, challenges in personnel management, employee motivation and morale, staff development, problem solving and decision making.
In addition records and reports, evaluation of personnel / performance appraisal, role of nurses in material management, quality assurance in nursing care, legal aspects related to nursing, conflict resolution, counseling skills and supervisory techniques will be addressed.
“The aim of the workshops is to refine and update the knowledge and skills of nursing professionals in the art and science of nursing management,” stated Prof. K. T. Moly, Principal, Amrita College of Nursing and chief coordinator of the workshops.
