A Textbook of Pharmacy Pratice

A Text Book of Pharmacy Practice — is the name of the new book authored by Amrita’s Dr. Revikumar, in collaboration with his mentor, Dr. B. D. Miglani. Currently Principal of the Amrita School of Pharmacy, Dr. Revikumar has had a professional association with Dr. B. D. Miglani of over two decades.

The book was officially released on October 19, 2009, at a function organized at the Health Sciences Campus in Kochi. The first print edition of the book has already completely sold out.

Dr. Revikumar“Many colleges in South India have started adopting this as a text for their hospital pharmacy, clinical pharmacy and community pharmacy courses,” explained Dr. Revikumar. “Existing textbooks on the subject do not include details about Indian practices and the Indian scenario; this is where this new text fills in a long-felt gap.”

Students of B Pharm, M Pharm and Pharm D in India will now have an opportunity to learn not only about the best practices in the field globally, but also current trends in India as well as the history of the development of the profession in this nation. The book is the product of teaching and research conducted in the field for over a decade.

“A reference book for practicing pharmacists and teachers and students of pharmacy … the strength of this book lies in its base of a strong Indian historical background with global references, wherever needed,” states the preface.

The book is divided into 13 sections, some of which provide comprehensive overviews of topics such as Community Pharmacy Services, Medication Errors, Pharmcovigilance, Patient Counseling, Procurement, Storage and Inventory Control of Medicines.

Published by Career Publications, the hard-cover edition retails at Rs. 750. There are a total of 592 pages.

Dr. Miglani“I was able to complete the book because of the constant encouragement I received from Dr. B. D. Miglani, my co-author and teacher,” further shared Dr. Revikumar. Dr. Biglani, now 80, is considered as the father of the Hospital Pharmacy Education in India. He started the Indian Hospital Pharmacists Association as well as the Indian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy.

Like student, like teacher. Dr. Revikumar, himself, also has many accomplishments to his credit. Prior to joining Amrita, he served as HoD, Dept of Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy at Trivandrum Medical College. He was awarded the Prof. M. L. Schroff Memorial National Award for his pioneering work in the profession.

We congratulate him and his co-author for having published the new book.
