Dr. Prasanth Mohapatra, Professor and Chairman, Department of Computer Sciences at the University of California (UC) in Davis, was recently in Amrita as the co-chair of the International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief.
Subsequent to his participation in the international the conference, Dr. Mohapatra submitted a join proposal with Amrita’s Dr. Maneesha on Water Quality Monitoring using wireless sensors. The proposal received seed funding from UC Davis.
Now the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two universities will pave the way for more research scientists from the two universities to collaborate with each other.
The agreement was signed on behalf of Amrita by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Venkat Rangan and on behalf of the American university by Chancellor Dr. Linda P.B. Katehi.
UC Davis is a public teaching and research university established in 1905. It is ranked as one of the top 10 public universities in the US. Its faculty is well known for research pursuits in the arts and sciences.
“The Amrita Center for International Programs (ACIP) is proud to announce that the MoU which was signed on February 24, 2012, will enable the further development of basic scientific and technological research, and graduate and undergraduate education at the two institutions,” stated Dr. Maneesha Ramesh, Director, ACIP.
The Center is currently processing applications from Amrita students desirous of participating in the UC Davis India Research Internship Program and the Global Study Program during summer 2012.
Students who excel in their studies will be eligible for scholarships.
“These programs provide wonderful opportunities our top performing students who aspire to conduct research and participate in internships at a global university. We are accepting applications from students enrolled in bachelors, masters and doctoral programs of computer science at all our campuses,” Dr. Maneesha stated.
“The programs will enable participating students to earn certificates and credits. In addition, they will gain research experience at state-of-the-art laboratories in Davis. They will understand how to plan and manage experiments, conduct experiments independently, analyze data and summarize research results,” she added.
In addition to these programs, the universities might soon unveil other collaborative initiatives. Prof. Jay Misra, Chairman, Amrita School of Business at the Amritapuri campus is actively working on a possible joint program with Dr. Andrea Toupadakis, School of Business at UC Davis.
“These programs will definitely add value to our students, giving them an enviable edge in the pursuit of higher education,” summed up Dr. Maneesha.
