Amrita engineering students now have yet another avenue to pursue their aerospace interests.
The SAEINDIA collegiate chapter of the Amrita School of Engineering in Coimbatore recently inaugurated an Aerospace Club to give wings to the dreams of enthusiastic and inquisitive students.
A global association of over 128,000 engineers, SAE or the Society for Automotive Engineers, promotes learning and development in the aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle industries.
The club inauguration was led by Dr. David Schutt, CEO of SAE International.
“India plays a crucial role in the growth of the aerospace industry,” Dr. David told the assembly.
He enlightened students on the advancements in the automotive industry and the need to foster life-long learning.
Mr. Murli Iyer, Executive Advisor, Global Affairs, SAE, who was also present, spoke on how mobility is connected to a country’s gross domestic product.
He urged students to use SAE and the new club to exchange ideas and help the association grow.
Amrita offers a B.Tech. program in Aerospace Engineering at its Coimbatore campus. Students enrolled in this program, as well as those studying for a B.Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering, joined the club in large numbers.
In recent times, India is beginning to see an expanding aerospace market as well as rising technological and manufacturing capabilities in local companies.
Skills of aerospace engineers are valued not only in the aerospace industry, but in several other fields as well. For example, in the manufacture of motor vehicles, aerospace engineers are now charged with the task of designing vehicles with low resistance to air and greater fuel efficiency.
“I hope that the new aerospace club provides a platform for students to use what they learn in their classrooms and in a way that complements their learning,” said Dr. Satheesh K., Assistant Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering.
“This club is one of the best things that has happened to our department,” enthusiastically shared M. Anusya, second-year student.
“The club will inspire us to be creative and innovative in our thoughts and provide us a forum for implementing our ideas.”
The club inauguration also saw a prize distribution ceremony wherein winners of High Octane, a chain of events held in the college as part of SAE activities, were honored.
