Kerala Chief Minister Pinnarayi Vijayan visited Amrita Centre for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine on Saturday, March 11, 2017. The Chief Minister was received at the Centre by Dr. Shantikumar Nair, Centre Director and Dean of Research, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. He was shown an exhibition of medical products developed in the research labs of the Centre. These included oncology products such as nano medicine for leukemia, nano gels for cancer and nano wafer for brain tumors.
He was also shown tissue engineered products and wound healing products that were developed using nanomaterials. These included bone grafts, beads ad gels for bone filling and healing, contrast nano agents for monitoring bone healing, nano thread and nano cloth for such applications as sutures and vascular grafts. A low cost protein purification system was displayed.
Following the exhibition and a brief meeting with Dr. Nair, the CM visited the nano labs where he saw how cancer diagnostics was conducted using a Raman hand-held device and how nano threads are developed and used to make vascular grafts. The Chief Minister appreciated the research work ongoing at the Centre.
