Dr. Oleg Sorokin, MD, PhD, Specialist in Human Physiology; Director, Biokvant Limited, Russia and Managing Director, National Ayurvedic Medical Association, Russia, addressed students and faculty of Amrita School of Ayurveda and gave an extensive talk on Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnsosis Based on Heart Rate Variability Analysis. Dr. Oleg Sorokin has studied and worked at Novosibirsk State University, Novosibirsk City, Russia.
VedaPulse is a hardware and software kit for performing pulse analysis. Heart Rate Variability Analysis Method, which is the basis of the algorithm of VedaPulse kit, is recommended by European Society of Cardiology and North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (1996). In his lecture, Dr. Oleg Sorokin explained how heart rate variability based algorithms could be used to make diagnostic assessments derived from the methods of pulse analysis used in Ayurveda. He elaborated on how the high frequency, low frequency and very low frequency signals could be analyzed to understand the dominant dosha in the patient. He further demonstrated how the cardiointervalograms plotted patterns that revealed the movement of snake (Vata), frog (Pitta) and Swan (Kapha). Pulse Diagnosis in Ayurveda is not taught formally in the teaching institutions, though a few experts still practice this technique. The subjective element in pulse diagnosis has come in the way of rigorous scientific assessment of this technique. Dr. Oleg Sorokin highlighted how a tool like Veda Pulse Device could be used to objectively understand and interpret the rationale behind pulse diagnosis in Ayurveda.
