International Travel Fellowships for Spine Surgery Expert

Dr. Krishnakumar R., Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Amrita School of Medicine was recently selected for two prestigious international travel fellowships.
 

Dr. krishnakumarHe became the first Indian citizen to receive the SICOT Danish Travelling Fellowship in Spine Surgery as well as the International Group for Advancement in Spinal Sciences (IGASS) International Travelling Fellowship, both within the same year.
 

Dr. Krishnakumar will now travel to Europe to visit various Centers of Excellence in Spine Surgery.
 

At Amrita, Dr. Krishnakumar practices extensively in areas of deformity correction such as scoliosis surgery, spinal tumor surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery for disc prolapse. Spine surgery caters to a large number of patients suffering from back pain, fractures, spinal tumors, spinal infections and deformities.
 

“Spine surgery has become a highly sophisticated subspecialty to tackle various spinal pathologies,” stated Dr. Krishnakumar. “Patients with spine deformities can be now safely surgically corrected to have good cosmetic and functional outcomes. These fellowships shall help me acquire and impart knowledge for the betterment of our patients and our department.”
 

Instituted by SICOT, the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Danish Travelling Fellowship in spine surgery aims to promote the advancement of the science and art of orthopaedics and traumatology at the international level.
 

spine-surgeryThis fellowship will enable Dr. Krishnakumar to receive training from Prof. Cody Bünger, Chief of Spine Surgery at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.
 

The International Group for Advancement in Spinal Science (IGASS) Travelling Fellowship will offer him the opportunity to acquire additional experience in spine techniques. After Denmark, Dr. Krishnakumar will travel to some more of the world’s best spine centers including Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Trust Hospitals in London, UK and Bordeaux University Hospital in France.
 

He will receive advanced training in several orthopaedic and spine surgery techniques including ALIF surgery, scoliosis surgery and navigational spine surgery.
 

“These fellowships are highly coveted and a large number of international aspirants apply every year,” stated the doctor. “This year too, it was very competitive. My current faculty position at Amrita, which is an AO International Fellowship Centre for Spine Surgery and my previous experience at Singapore General Hospital has helped me in getting these fellowships.”

Dr. Krishnakumar joined Amrita in August 2010 after obtaining training in Spine Surgery from the Singapore General Hospital. He was also a recipient of spine surgery fellowship at the Singapore General Hospital.
