The Second International Conference on Simulation Modeling and Analysis, COSMA 2011, was hosted at the Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore during December 17-19.
Organized by the Amrita Department of Mechanical Engineering in partnership with the International Association for Engineering Analysis and National Institute of Technology, Calicut, the conference was a follow-up to COSMA 2009.
Keynote addresses, technical paper presentations from academia and industry, panel discussions, exhibits, and poster sessions all focused on simulation modeling and analysis, as applied to multiple disciplines of engineering.
A widely applied methodology for studying the behaviour of engineering systems, simulation helps with developing solutions to problems of design and operation.
Its applications are not limited to engineering alone; the Computational Neurosciences Lab in Amrita uses advanced simulation techniques to unearth secrets of the brain.
The Sakshat Amrita Vocational Education group also uses it to impart training in environments of virtual reality.
Mainly focusing on the engineering applications of simulation, COSMA 2011 featured an inaugural address by Dr. Korien Issac, Indian Institute of Science and Technology, Trivadrum.
Of the 300 papers received, 137 were presented. The presented papers selected after a comprehensive peer review, will be considered for publication in the Journal of Mechanical Engineering Research, International Journal of Enterprise Network Management and International Journal of Electronic Transport, among others.
Papers discussed simulation for computational fluid dynamics problems, hybrid finite element methods and applications to dynamic problems in solid mechanics and simulation of fluid flow, heat transfer and heat dissipation in electronic chips.
During December 12-13, a pre-conference workshop was conducted on Finite Element Methods and Practical Stress Analysis by the International Association for Engineering Analysis on the Amrita campus. The workshop drew participants from research organizations, service sector industries and academia.
Participants also had the opportunity to attend a post-conference workshop at NIT Calicut.
“Overall, the conference was very useful,” shared Sree Hari Kumar, Technical Director, ProSIM, who was an invited speaker.
“The organizers brought out the interdisciplinary aspects of the subject. I also benefitted from seeing the automobile labs on the university campus,” he added.
“The primary aim of COSMA 2011 was to focus on novel concepts and methods of simulation for design, analysis and manufacturing as well as look into the latest trends and developments in mathematical and numerical modeling, as applied to various disciplines in engineering,” stated Dr. K. Ramesh Kumar, Professor and Chairperson, Amrita Department of Mechanical Engineering.
“We aimed at bringing together students, researchers and engineers working in these areas for an exchange of ideas and to formulate a road map through discussions and deliberations for the young engineers to follow-through. We are glad that the conference was successful in these aspects,” he added.
