International Conference on Graph Theory and its Applications (ICGTA 2015)

December 30, 2015 - 2:32
International Conference on Graph Theory and its Applications (ICGTA 2015)

The Department of Mathematics of Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore campus, organized a four-day International Conference on Graph Theory, Graph Algorithms & Applications from 16th to 19th December, 2015 at the Coimbatore campus.

More than 130 delegates from all over the world participated in the conference- an area with wide-ranging applications in computer science, communication, linguistics, computational chemistry and physics, biology, etc. Different applications of Graph theory such as Graph Optimizations, Computing Techniques and Network Communications were discussed. Some day-to-day applications of graph theory include how we use the Internet; the development of new drugs and how a city supplies power to its residents.

Seventy-five scholarly papers, invited talks and research discussions were part of the conference and these were presented by leading academicians and researchers from India, USA, Canada, France, Germany, China, Slovenia and Australia. The main objective of this inter-disciplinary conference was to bring top researchers in this cutting-edge area of graph theory and applications to Amrita to foster collaboration and also provide an exposure to researchers and students to the scientific problems in this field.

Eminent Professors presented their cutting edge research problems in the conference, which included:

  • Prof. Douglas B. West, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA and editor of the reputed journal, Discrete Mathematics.
  • Prof. Andre Raspaud, Professor Emeritus, LaBRI, Bordeaux University, France.  The LaBRi research group is credited with several research breakthroughs in graph theory.
  • Prof. Pawel Pralat, Associate Chair for Research, Ryerson University, Canada.
  • Prof. Xuding Zhu, Zhejiang Normal University, China.
  • Prof. Arvind Ayyer, Mathematics department, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

An expected outcome of this conference was building a community of researchers in this topical and inter-disciplinary area and also stimulating joint research work between Indian researchers in graph theory and the visiting professors from outside India. Additionally, a sizable number of students were expected to be attracted to research and postdoctoral work in graph theory.
