The Department of English and Languages, Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi, conducted a two day international conference, “In Between: Critical Humanities in Context”, on 21st and 22nd October, 2016. Around two hundred delegates, including academic community from IITs, Central Universities and colleges and professionals from all over the country, actively participated in the conference. The conference consisted of paper presentations and discussions of key issues in critical humanities.
Swami Anaghamrita Chaitanya officially inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp. Dr. U. Krishnakumar, Director, Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi; D. Venkat Rao, Senior Professor, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad and Anandakuttan B. Unnithan, Senior Professor, IIM, Kozhikode, were also present at the event. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. D. Venkat Rao.
The plenaries were Prof. M. V. Narayanan, Department of English, Calicut University; Prof. C. B. Sudhakaran, Department of English, Ilahiya College, Moovattupuzha and Prof. C. S. Jayaraman from Department of English and Languages, Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi. Mr. Heinz Johannes Paul, German scholar, addressed the gathering and held discussions on both days. The research scholars and students from Amrita School of Arts and Sciences and other prestigious institutions took part in the two day academic deliberations.
“We are happy that the conference brought together scholars from various disciplines, generating a rewarding synthesis. Moreover, research scholars and students immensely benefitted from deliberations. The conference is the result of excellent teamwork,” said Dr. Sreenath Muraleedharan K, Assistant Professor, Department of English, School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi, and Devi K. Assistant Professor, Department of English, School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi, who co-ordinated the conference. Kishan Thingbaijam, Research Scholar from EFLU, Hyderabad, described the conference as “intellectually enriching”.
