The months of August, September and October saw Amrita students from Amritapuri, Bengaluru, Kochi and Mysore campuses converge at the Coimbatore campus to participate in various inter-campus sports events.
Beginning with the swimming meet for men and women during mid-August where over 60 students competed, the momentum gradually built up to see participation peak at nearly 470 Amrita students, who contended for honors in table tennis, chess, badminton, volleyball, football and basketball in September.
The month of October saw nearly 250 contestants, this time including staff members also, who played and participated in tennis, weight lifting, power lifting and cricket tournaments.
“It was the guidance received and Amma’s blessings that helped us successfully organize all the various events. We are also grateful to those involved directly or indirectly in organizing,” stated Dr. O. J. Kumaresan, Physical Education Director, Coimbatore campus.
He shared some snippets from the thrilling, three-month long journey.
“Those students who participated in the swimming meet were elated at the opportunity to compete in our Olympic size swimming pool. They were appreciative of the facilities and the services here. Some students asked us to organize coaching camps in the summer.”
It was the host campus that bagged the team trophies for both men and women, with Amritapuri claiming the runners-up trophy for men and Bengaluru for women.
Arjun J. and Sowmya K. of the Coimbatore campus won the individual titles for men and women respectively.
Basketball and table tennis saw Bengaluru campus emerge victorious, in the category for women. While Ramya Krishnan was declared as best player in the former, Ragava Selvi lifted the individual title in the latter.
Students from the Kochi campus won the badminton championship even as Amritapuri took home the top honors in chess.
The trophies for cricket and powerlifting were also claimed by the Amritapuri campus.
Gopu Rajan, second-year student of BTech (Electrical and Electronics Engineering), who won the best player award for cricket shared, “I felt elated when our team came together and fought for victory; it was a memorable moment I will never forget.”
Arun T. Alex won the best lifter award. “Our campus won six of the seven categories in powerlifting,” proudly stated Krishnakumar S., Physical Education Director, Amritapuri campus.
It was the host campus however, that outdid all others, in claiming the most number of trophies including men’s table tennis, chess, volleyball, football, basketball, tennis and weigh-lifting.
During the valedictory session, Br. Abhayamrita Chaithanya, Pro-Chancellor, highlighted the need for wholesome development and emphasized the oneness of all Amrita students, regardless of which campus they belonged to.
Students from all campuses came together once again when they represented Amrita in the South Zone Inter-University Football Tournament organized in Chidambaram during October 2012.
