The IEEE Power Electronics Society Student Branch Chapter at Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru campus, organized a seminar on “Power Electronics Applications in Power Systems” by Mr. V. Suresh Babu, Asst. Director, NPTI (PSTI), Ministry of Power, Govt. of India. The seminar was held on March 2nd, 2016, at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Bengaluru Campus. M. Tech. Power Electronics, final year and pre-final year students, along with faculty members of the Electrical and Electronics department, attended the seminar.
Mr. V. Suresh Babu started his talk by giving an overview of even distribution, consumption and generation using certification. He gave an insightful view of Renewable Energy Systems, certification and its applications in transmission systems. He gave the audience an exposure to all India capacity, i.e., 281423 MW and potential of renewable energy as on December 31, 2015, i.e., 28068 MW, installed wind power capacity and penetration level, typical solar generation pattern in Gujarat, typical demand profile and supply-mix in Southern Region, Typical Transmission Arrangement of RE Generation Farm with Grid. He gave a clear picture of the solar power evacuation scheme and ISTS strengthening, as well as Intra state strengthening, dynamic reactive compensation, phase wise transmission strengthening.
Mr. Babu gave a brief introduction about integration- the factors affecting impact of renewable energy on grid operation were introduced to the audience with a brief mention of each. He talked about integration issues like forecasting and scheduling, energy balancing in real time due to unpredictability, regulation – age, etc., load following, costs of wind generation – mode, energy storage, demand response, effect on voltage profile and variations. Constituents on distribution network, voltage stability problems, frequency stability problems, fault levels, small signal stability issues, DFIG/DVR were covered.
Various issues in large scale renewable integration and mitigating measures for these issues were introduced to audience and details were given about “Indian Grid-Avenues for Wind Integration” and also about various energy storage alternatives like pumped hydro- typically > 200 MW and days of storage, compressed air energy storage (CAES) – 50-500MW based on blended gas air generation, distributed energy storage system (DESS) – high temp batteries up to 50 MW and flywheels/lithium-ion up to 20 MW, community energy storage (CES) – 25-50kW, 1-2 hour pad mounted.
He also discussed electric vehicles which introduce vast electricity storage potential for enabling wind generation and provide ancillary service for grid operators by participating in electricity markets. A brief description about Renewable Energy Management Centers (REMCs) and its functions. He gave an overview of energy penetration and capacity penetration variation according to scenario. He concluded the talk by motivating students to join in IEEE for networking with experts and to get updated with the present technology.
The seminar concluded with vote of thanks and felicitation of the speaker.
