Gokulashtami Celebrations at Amrita’s Coimbatore Campus

“Hare krishna hare krishna, krishna krishna hare hare………….
Radhe krishna radhe krishna radha govinda……”

With Sri Krishna bhajans and slogans, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Coimbatore Campus celebrated this year’sGokulashtami on August 17, 2014. Gokulashtami is also known as Sri Krishna Jayanthi, the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna.

The festivity began in the early morning with Nagara Sankeerthanam where students and faculty took an idol of the Krishna across the campus singing His glory.

Around 9.00 A.M. the procession of richly decorated floats from each department of the campus, screening various messages and sights from Krishna Avatar, began. Little girls and boys dressed as Krishnas and Gopikas walked beside the floats and a group of students singing and dancing accompanied them. The float which portrayed the Varaha Avatar rescuing Goddess of Earth and Vedas from the sea by the department of Computer Science and Engineering bagged the first place in the competition.

Small idols of Lord Krishna stood in little huts all over the campus. As always Swami Jnanamritanandapuri distributed “Prasadam” for entire Amritians.

In the afternoon, Uriyadi and Vadamvali (tug of war) rituals were performed. The students also participated in various competitions based on the theme of Sri Krishna such as dance, music, skit, quiz, elocution, essaywriting, painting and Rangoli.

“It was really good to get an opportunity to be involved in celebrations like these. It may only be here that we get a chance to have fun related with traditional functions. We thoroughly enjoyed this moment,” stated a group of first year students.

The day ended with a bhajan session, which went past midnight, by the department faculty members, students and ashramites.
