Dr. V. Narayanan Unni, Professor and Head of the Department of Nephrology at the Amrita School of Medicine was nominated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, UK, to receive the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP).
This honor was bestowed in recognition of Dr. Unni’s clinical and academic achievements. The fellowship will be conferred at a special ceremony on June 6, 2012 in Glasgow.
Dr. Unni has had a brilliant academic career. After obtaining a first rank during his pre-degree course, he enrolled for his medical studies in the Calicut Medical College. Here he secured the first rank in the first, second and final MBBS years, and was recognized as the Best Outgoing Student of the college.
During this time, Dr. Unni also received the Senior Research Fellowship of the Indian Council of Medical Research under the Talent Search Scheme.
After completing his MD in Internal Medicine from Christian Medical College, Vellore and DM in Nephrology from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, he also obtained the Diplomate of the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi.
Dr. Unni joined the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences when the hospital began functioning in 1998. He set up the Department of Nephrology. The Department today proudly boasts of a state-of-the-art dialysis unit.
Under his leadership, the Department of Nephrology offers a DM programme in Nephrology and masters degree courses in Dialysis Therapy and Allied Health Sciences at Amrita.
There is also a highly successful live-related donor kidney transplant program. Dr. Unni spearheaded the cadaver donor kidney transplantations at AIMS as well. The kidney transplantation program at Amrita is considered as one of the best such programs nation-wide in terms of volume and outcomes.
In 2010, Dr. Unni was selected as Key Opinion Leader for Kidney Transplantation in India by the International Transplantation Society. He is a member of the consensus panel of the Peritoneal Dialysis Society.
Dr. Unni’s teaching career has spanned three decades. He is the examiner for super-specialty (DM) training in Nephrology at various universities and for the Diplomate of the National Board of Examination in Nephrology under the Government of India.
Dr. Unni has authored many research publications and penned numerous chapters in textbooks. We congratulate him on his latest achievement.
