In a heartening event that underscored the power of education and community empowerment, 24 women from Thirupalaikudy Village proudly received their certificates on August 1st, marking their successful completion of a comprehensive seaweed farming training program. This initiative, organized by Amrita University in collaboration with the Center for Women Empowerment and Gender Equality, and in association with Transworld, is designed to equip women with sustainable livelihood skills that not only provide economic independence but also contribute positively to environmental conservation.
The ceremony was inaugurated by the Sampooja Swami Ajamritananda Puri, who served as the chief guest and personally distributed the certificates to the graduates. The event was further graced by the presence of village leaders Abbas and Sasikani, who have been instrumental in supporting the community throughout the program. Sasikani delivered a poignant address, emphasizing the transformative impact this training has had on the women and the broader community. Mrs Reshma Ramesh, Vice Chair of the Department of Social Work at Amrita University, also addressed the gathering, providing a detailed overview of the seaweed farming project and other initiatives inspired by Amma’s vision of community development and empowerment.
This graduation ceremony is not just a celebration of the women’s achievements but also a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to empower local communities. By training women in seaweed farming, the program aims to create sustainable business opportunities within the community, allowing them to support their families and improve their standard of living. This initiative, closely aligned with Amma’s vision of fostering self-reliance and environmental stewardship, represents a hopeful future where the women of Thirupalaikudy lead by example, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
