Empowering Anganwadi Workers: One-Day Training & Awareness Camp Conducted by STI Hub Mizoram

STI Hub Mizoram successfully conducted a One-Day Training & Awareness Camp for 83 Anganwadi workers of Aizawl Rural Block at the Synod Conference Centre, Aizawl. The event aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of Anganwadi workers, enabling them to better serve their communities in areas of health, nutrition, digital safety, and Ayurveda-based holistic well-being. This training program directly contributes to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SGD 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by promoting nutrition, health, education, and economic empowerment.

Distinguished Guests

The training program was honoured by the presence of:

  • Dr. Lalnilawma, Minister of State for Rural Development, Mizoram, as the Chief Guest
  • Mrs. Zoramthangi Chhangte, Director of Women & Child Development, Mizoram, as the Guest of Honour

Both dignitaries shared valuable insights on the pivotal role of Anganwadi workers in fostering community health and child development. Their speeches highlighted the need for continuous learning and adaptation to new challenges in maternal and child welfare. A special guest appearance was also made by Dr. Raghu Raman, the Principal Investigator of the STI Hub project from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, who flew all the way from Kerala to join the event and interact with the ground staff.

Key Focus Areas of the Training

The training camp covered a range of critical topics to empower Anganwadi workers with practical knowledge and skills, including:

  • Essential Nutrition & Hygiene Practices: Understanding the importance of proper nutrition and hygiene to improve maternal and child health.
  • Utilization of Locally Available Nutrient-Rich Foods: Encouraging the use of easily accessible, highly nutritious food sources to combat malnutrition.
  • Anemia Prevention: Educating workers on identifying and addressing anemia in pregnant/lactating mothers and adolescents.
  • Digital Safety & Well-being of Children: Equipping Anganwadi workers with tools and strategies to safeguard children in the digital age.
  • Dinacharya – Ayurvedic Daily Routine: Exploring time-tested Ayurvedic practices for maintaining holistic health and well-being.
  • Prakriti – Understanding Physical Constitution: Introducing Anganwadi workers to Ayurveda’s perspective on individual health based on body constitution.

The session was designed to be highly interactive, ensuring that participants could engage in discussions, share experiences, and receive hands-on training. Through presentations, demonstrations and discussions, the training provided practical insights that Anganwadi workers can directly apply in their daily responsibilities. The workers were also given a Prakriti form to fill out and their personalized results were shared with them so that they can understand their Ayurvedic prakriti and adopt appropriate lifestyle and dietary changes in order to optimise their overall health.

A key highlight of the event was demonstration of value-added food products made from ingredients that were primarily locally sourced. The STI Hub team had developed Moringa-Jaggery Cookies, Ginger-Perilla Bites and Soya Nutriballs, samples of which were presented for tasting to the guests. The products were highly appreciated by the guests for not only their delicious taste but also their health benefits. The Hub aims to train the youth and SHGs from local community to produce these products and thus strengthen their existing livelihoods.

The one-day training was a significant step toward strengthening community health initiatives in Mizoram. By equipping Anganwadi workers with updated knowledge and practical skills, STI Hub Mizoram continues to contribute to the overall well-being of women and children in rural areas.

STI Hub is a part of the STI-ITLIVES project, which is a collaboration between Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kerala and Mizoram University, Mizoram. The project is funded by Dept. of Science and Technology, Government of India. The training program was organized in collaboration with Directorate of Woman & Child Development, Mizoram.
