Dr. S. Thirumalini, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Coimbatore, was in USA recently to receive the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

“The award is conferred upon Subramaniam Thirumalini in recognition of significant contributions to teaching, research and student development,” cited the award certificate.

The award was presented to Dr. Thirumalini at the 2010 SAE World Congress and Exposition in Detroit, Michigan on April 13. Dr. Andrew Brown, President of SAE International, was on hand to present the award.

While in Detroit, Dr. Thirumalini participated in the 3-day SAE World Congress.

“Automotive companies and research institutions from all over the world presented the latest developments in several areas,” she shared later. “An Innovators Exhibition showcased the best in the field globally.”

Accompanied by Mr. Dayal, President of SAE (India Chapter), she called upon the CEO of SAE International, Dr. David Schutt. Their meeting focused on various initiatives that could be undertaken by the SAE to improve the technology for mobility in India.

Award

“Among other things, we discussed the educational scenario in India and also the need to develop standards for the Indian automotive industry that are more in tune with Indian requirements,” she stated later. 

Prior to the award ceremony, Dr. Thirumalini had an opportunity to visit the Chrysler facility at Auburn Hills in Michigan where she participated in discussions on industry funded research projects at Amrita.

“I met with the chief of the company’s Computational Fluid Dynamic Division,” she stated. One of her areas of interest, CFD helps analyze in-cylinder flow dynamics for engines and aids also in temperature profiling of air conditioning in cars.

In addition, Dr. Thirumalini participated in a unique event.

World in Motion program

The award-winning World in Motion program conducted an Olympics for school children at the SAE World Congress, and Dr. Thirumalini was there to observe the children learn design concepts at their young age.

“This program will now be implemented in Amrita Vidyalayam in Ettimadai, Coimbatore also,” she informed. “Ashok Leyland has come forward to sponsor it for us.”
