Dr. Venkat Krovi on Quantifying Skill

Dr. Venkat N. Krovi, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Director, ARMLab from State University of New York at Buffalo, visited AMMACHI Labs on 22nd December, 2013 and delivered a talk to researchers on “Quantitative Systems for Technical Assessment and Training of Skills.” Dr Krovi talked about the research being done at the Automation, Robotics and Mechatronics (ARM) lab, especially on the current work being done to develop methods to capture, quantify and characterize human manipulatory skill and its acquisition. He said that such an understanding is critical in the context of skill-training for human performance of manipulation tasks for diverse audiences (ranging from astronauts to assembly line operators, pilots to surgeons, musicians to handicraft makers). To further illustrate this, Dr. Krovi showed us some cutting edge videos demonstrating the use of medical simulators and haptic devices in the training of needle insertion into a patient.
