Dr. P.R. Padmakumar Secures Rs 240,000 Grant from the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), Government of India, to study Philosophical Counseling in Vedanta Darsana: Contributions of Contemporary Spiritual Guides

Co-Principal Investigators:

  1. Dr. Ramakrishnan M, Visiting Professor, 9447357736
  2. Dr. Anand S, Assistant Professor, 8589004288

Dr. Padmakumar‘s research delves into the practical application of Vedanta philosophy within the framework of philosophical counseling. The study will specifically examine effective methodologies derived from Vedanta Darśana – a school of Hindu philosophy emphasizing the ultimate reality (Brahman) and the individual’s inherent unity with it – for use in contemporary therapeutic settings. The research goes beyond theoretical exposition, focusing on the practical methods employed by spiritual masters in South India. This involves an empirical investigation into the techniques these masters use, analyzing their approach to counseling and identifying the specific elements rooted in Vedanta.

The study will explore the conceptual underpinnings of philosophical counseling as understood and practiced within this specific South Indian context. This may include analyzing the roles of concepts like Jnana Yoga (path of knowledge), Bhakti Yoga (path of devotion), and Karma Yoga (path of selfless action) as therapeutic tools.

The role of specific Vedanta texts, such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, and commentaries on them, in informing and shaping these counseling practices will also be a central focus. The research will aim to identify how these texts are interpreted and applied in practical counseling situations.

Furthermore, the research will likely investigate the distinctive features of this South Indian approach to philosophical counseling, comparing and contrasting it with other forms of philosophical counseling or psychotherapy, which could involve identifying cultural nuances and specific techniques unique to the region.

Ultimately, Dr. Padmakumar aims to establish the pragmatic efficacy of Vedanta philosophy in a therapeutic context. This will likely involve carefully examining case studies, interviews with practitioners, and analyzing the effectiveness of specific Vedanta-based counseling techniques in achieving desired therapeutic outcomes, such as improved self-awareness, reduced suffering, and enhanced psychological well-being. The goal is to articulate a clear and applicable framework for using Vedantic principles in philosophical counseling, contributing to philosophy and counseling psychology.

The sanctioned amount is 600,000, for three years.
