Dr. Maneesha V Ramesh showcased her expertise and dedication to environmental causes at the 10th South and Central Asian Biosphere Reserve Network Meeting (SACAM) held in Chennai, India, from 1st to 3rd November 2023. Organized by UNESCO under the theme “From Ridge to Reef”, the conference fostered critical discussions on integrated ecosystem management and sustainable development across South and Central Asia. Dr. Maneesha in her role as the UNESCO Chair on Experiential Learning for Sustainable Innovation and Development shared insightful perspectives on pioneering initiatives and success stories focused on “Empowering Communities in Ecosystem Restoration,”. Amrita, guided by our Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Amma, has been at the forefront of holistic initiatives aimed at ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and cleanliness drives. Dr. Maneesha highlighted the impactful contributions made by Amrita in these areas and emphasized the importance of community involvement in achieving sustainable and resilient ecosystems. These projects not only focus on academic research but also prioritize practical, community-driven solutions that foster long-term environmental sustainability. Her presentation resonated with the audience, comprising experts, researchers, and policymakers from South and Central Asian countries, fostering collaboration and exchange of ideas for a more sustainable future. In her address, Dr. Maneesha expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the prestigious event and underlined the importance of collective efforts in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation. She emphasized the need for a concerted approach that involves communities, academia, and policymakers to achieve meaningful and lasting impact. The 10th SACAM brought together Biosphere Reserve stakeholders from the global south and north, beyond South & Central Asia, so experiences, challenges, ideas and best practices can be shared on a wide international scale, including with United Nations agencies. The event aimed at contributing to peace and good relationships between participating Member States, as well as, the private sector to make contributions to nature conservation, climate resilience, and people living in harmony with nature
