Dr. Maneesha V Ramesh took part in the recently concluded COP28, the United Nations’ annual climate conference held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023. COP28 concluded with a historic milestone with the adoption of a groundbreaking agreement, symbolizing the “beginning of the end” of the fossil fuel era. As an esteemed invited speaker, Prof. Maneesha addressed two high-profile panels, offering invaluable insights that contributed to the overarching dialogue on climate action. In the first panel, titled “Indigenising Education for Climate Action: Strategies, Case Studies, and Testimonies,” she delved into practical tools for critical reflection and action. Her discourse drew from Amrita’s extensive work with over 101 adopted villages across India, showcasing innovative education methods and technological interventions. The session was organized by Space4Innovation/GEO Indigenous Alliance. In the second session, titled “Indigenous-Led Climate Action: Democratising Space Data for Planetary Wellbeing and Education,” Dr. Maneesha shed light on how Amrita collaborates with Indigenous communities to enhance climate education and implements grassroots-level actions. Emphasizing inclusivity and cultural sensitivity, Amrita ensures the voices of villagers are heard, establishing a model for community engagement. COP28 witnessed negotiators from nearly 200 countries reaching a decision on the world’s first ‘global stocktake’ to intensify climate action before the end of the decade. This collective effort aims to keep the global temperature limit of 1.5°C within reach. COP, which stands for “Conference of Parties,” brings together countries that signed the original UN climate agreement in 1992, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the pressing challenges of climate change on a global scale. Dr. Maneesha’s active participation and insightful contributions at COP28 underscore Amrita University’s dedication to advancing climate action initiatives and fostering sustainable solutions on the global stage.
