Design of Things Technical Event at Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru

An event titled, “Design of Things”, was arranged by IEEE-PES and IAS joint student branch chapter, Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru, on September 21, 2016. The event was attended by the students of BTech from all Departments of Engineering. The event was designed to encourage the innovative thinking and problem solving skills of the students. They were given a couple of problem statements and were asked to make teams of three.  They then spoke for two minutes about how they would go about designing a solution to given problems.

The problem statements were:

  1. We are in a hypothetical scenario in 2040, and almost all non-renewable sources of producing electrical energy have been completely depleted and are not available for usage. Design a futuristic solution which can be implemented in a structure to make it self-sustainable, energy efficient and secure.
  2. Large tracts of fertile land in India suffer from soil erosion by wind and water. This is listed as one of the ten major problems plaguing the growth of agriculture in India in the 21st century. Design a technological solution to remedy this.

They were evaluated on the basis of the innovation of their idea and feasibility to carry it out by Mrs. Manitha P. V. and Mrs. Anjan Jain who are the faculty members of the department of EEE. Winners were announced on the basis of above mentioned criteria for the idea of generating electricity through osmotic pressure from sea water.
