A seminar titled, “Synchrophasor for Smart Grid Application”, was arranged by IEEE-PES and IAS joint student branch chapter, Amrita School of Engineering (ASE), Bengaluru on September 3, 2016. The guest speaker was Mr. Kaliappa, joint director, CPRI, Bangalore, India. The event was attended by the students of BTech and MTech of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Mr. Kaliappa commenced by providing a brief introduction on smart grids and their advantages. The focus was on the role of power electronics and power systems in the evolution of synchrophasors, the types of PMU’s (Phasor Measurement Units), various installation methods and applications and advantages of synchrophasors. Mr. Kaliappa also discussed various modern techniques used in CPRI and also briefed students about trendy research areas. It was indeed a valuable session which informed the budding engineers about synchrophasors for smart grid applications.
