Prof. P. K. Viswanathan, Professor, Amrita School of Business, Kochi, co-edited a book titled, “Globalisation, Development and Plantation Labour in India”, published by Routledge India, with Prof. K.J. Joseph, Acting Director, Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum. This book was released by former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha MP, Shri. Jairam Ramesh, at the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Trivandrum, on January 21, 2017.
This book provides a detailed analysis of the impact of globalisation on plantation labour, dominated by women labour, in India. The studies presented here highlight the perpetuation of low wages, inferior social status and low human development of workers in this sector and explain the movement of labour away from this sector and the resultant labour shortage. It also highlights the perils involved in doing away with the Plantation Labour Act 1951 and provides the plausible way forward for improving the conditions of plantation workers. Rich in empirical analysis, this volume will prove essential for scholars and researchers of labour economics, development studies, gender studies and sociology.
Prof. P.K. Viswanathan has also co-edited another book titled “Micro Irrigation Systems in India: Emergence, Status and Impacts”, published by Springer Science and Business Media, with M. Dinesh Kumar and A. Narayanamoorthy.
The book provides a very rigorous and credible treatment of micro irrigation systems in India, covering almost all major issues and dimensions. As they are evaluated by eminent scholars with vast experience on the subject with varying disciplinary focus and different methodological approaches, it can both be an insightful source book for policy-makers and a practical handbook for scholars working in this emerging area of research and policy. Considering the limited amount of available empirical literature on micro irrigation systems, this volume will also have an immediate appeal to both the Indian and international audience” (Prof. R. Maria Saleth, Water Expert (Retired), International Water Management Institute, Colombo).
