Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore hosted the National Student Management Games (SMG) 2017, in association with AIMA (All India Management Association), from October 12th to 14th, 2017, at the Coimbatore campus.
National SMG 2017 is an annual gaming event that provides a platform where students can compete with their peers from other top institutions to apply their managerial capabilities toward running a business with good profit thru strategic decision making. These games are computer-based simulations that imitate market and economic reality. Students must consider and understand the impact of their decisions on such factors as financial, commercial, market and inventory reports. This “learn by doing” philosophy offers a microcosm for “real world” business, attempting to compress students’ two-year MBA programs into a two-day business challenge. Over 12,000 students have benefited from this unique learning experience in a competitive environment.
Popularly known as Chanakya, this national level competition is a computer-based game that simulates realistic business scenarios, giving management students a means to apply their theoretical knowledge and business acumen in multiple functional areas. Each team consists of four students who assume the roles of Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer. Each team creates a complete business plan and makes strategic decisions based on simulated but realistic market fluctuations. Which team wins is based on profit.
Mr. D. K. Gupta, Director, Business Simulation, All India Management Association(AIMA), New Delhi, and Mr. Vijay Singh, Faculty, AIMA, New Delhi, came to Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham to conduct the event. They both acknowledged that the competition this year was very intense and teams shifted positions frequently, even into the final round. The Teams participated in a preliminary round on the first two days. The members of the team adopted the roles of CEO, CFO, CMO and COO. Each Team represents an Enterprise and a common business case on a manufacturing or service industry is presented to each team with market data and financial updates. Participants were briefed about the industry to be run and all the preset rules and criteria of the game were defined and explained in advance. Each Team worked out of strategy in operations, marketing, finance and product development with an aim to achieve the pre-set goal.
K. Sreenath P. Nair, Parvathi Venugopal, Amrithaprasad, K. M. Sreeraj, from Amrita School of Business, Kochi, bagged the first prize.
