Amritasmitham, a three-day Coordinated School Health Program, was conducted at Eklavya Model Residential School, Pookode, Wayanad, from January 21-23, 2017. This program was organized as a part of a Health Promoting Schools Project conceptualized by the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Amrita School of Dentistry, Kochi. A team of 14 doctors was led by Prof. Chandrashekar J. and Prof. Joe Joseph.
The program aimed at improving health awareness among school children to inculcate healthy lifestyle practices. A total of 276 students participated in activities like health education, game-based learning activities, group discussions, yoga classes and sapling plantation. Intensive training in hand-washing and tooth brushing was provided and student patrols were identified to ensure sustainability of the program. All students and staff received a general medical, dental, eye check-up and preventive dental treatment services. The school was assessed and accorded as a Health Promoting School in Bronze category.
Recommendations for a healthy school environment were given. The valedictory function was attended by Mr. C. K. Saseendran, MLA, who handed over the Health Promoting School certificate. Mr. Shibu (Senior Superintendent, MRS Pookode) spoke on the occasion.
