The Coimbatore campus of the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham joined the Global Gita Chanting event initiated by the Chinmaya Mission on 10th December, 2016.
The day on which on Bhagavan Sri Krishna expounded the profound message of the Gita to Arjuna is observed as Gita Jayanti. This year, Gita Jayanti was celebrated on Saturday, 10th December, 2016. The event was marked by the chanting of selected verses from the Gita.
The Chinmaya Mission had sent out an appeal to millions of devotees and admirers of the Gita to chant these selected verses exactly at 6pm. At the Coimbatore campus, interested students, staff and faculty members assembled at the Seminar Hall to celebrate Gita Jayanti.
Dr. S. Mahadevan, Deputy Dean of the Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore, inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp, followed by Shanti mantras. Prof. Mahadevan expounded on the significance of the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita with reference to his own personal experiences. He exhorted that Amrita should continue the efforts for creating awareness among students regarding the treasure of knowledge and values hidden in the Gita.
The whole gathering later chanted 18 selected verses of the Gita, one each from the 18 chapters.
The event concluded with Vedic chanting by the faculty members of the department of Cultural Education who coordinated this event.
