Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was recently invited to present a tutorial at IFIP Networking 2010, an international conference conducted at IIT Madras during May 10-14, 2010.
Amrita’s tutorial on “Network Forensics” was one of two tutorials presented at the conference; the other tutorial was presented by faculty from IIT Bombay.
“Any communication system consists of a number of entities such as people, companies, computers, phones, and the like that communicate using a variety of communication channels and increasingly over open networks,” taught Dr. M. Sethumadhavan of Amrita.
“Protocols are the rules that govern these communications. Between these entities, which communicate over an untrusted medium, a sufficient level of security and confidentiality must be established.”
“The design and analysis of cryptographic systems and security protocols that process confidential information are important tools for attaining this goal. In this tutorial, we will discuss some of these methods.”
A PhD in Number Theory from the University of Calicut, Dr. M. Sethumadhavan is credited with starting the first Postgraduate program in Cyber Security in India at Amrita. Dr. Sethumadhavan leads several research projects with government funding.
In addition to Dr. Sethumadhavan’s session, Dr. Sandeep Kumar delivered a session on DNS, the Internet’s name resolution system, detailing threats ranging from early attacks pointed by Steven Bellovin to a recent attack in 2008 by Dan Kaminsky that fundamentally broke security in DNS.
“The tutorial was intended for people unfamiliar with the details of DNS and the attacks possible,” stated Dr. Sandeep who has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Purdue. Prior to joining the institution in July 2009, Dr. Sandeep worked with RSA Security in Bangalore.
A hands-on session by Mr. Kandasamy Munaisamy of Symantec, who demonstrated various vulnerabilities of computers to attacks like phishing and key logging was also part of the tutorial.
Dr. Venkat Rangan, Vice-Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham chaired this tutorial session.
“I feel very proud that our faculty were given the opportunity to organize this tutorial for a leading computer networking conference in the Asia Pacific region,” stated Dr. Venkat.
The 9th event of a series of International Conferences on Networking, Networking 2010 was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Technical Committee on Communication Systems (TC6).
It was jointly organized by IIT Madras and the Computer Society of India and chaired by Prof S.V. Raghavan, Scientific Secretary, Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of the India and Head of Network Systems Laboratory at IIT Madras.
