Amrita Participates in Respicon 2010

Asthma, smoking disorders, cancer of the lungs … all these respiratory diseases and more were discussed at Respicon 2010, the annual conference of the Academy of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (APCCM) in India.
 

Respicon 2010Organized during May 8-9, 2010 at the IMA House in Kochi, the conference drew several hundred delegate participants from around the country. Doctors from Amrita’s Health Sciences campus also participated.
 

“Faculty members from our Pulmonary Medicine Department played a pivotal role during the scientific sessions of the conference,” stated Dr. Sanjeev Singh, Senior Medical Administrator at AIMS.
 

Dr Kumari Indira was one of the judges for the postgraduate free paper session. Later, she was also nominated as the editor-in-chief of Pulmon the official journal of the APCCM.
 

Dr Rajesh V., Associate Professor at Amrita, presented a guest lecture titled Evaluation of New Fever in an ICU Subject.
 

“In recent years, we have seen the outbreak of many new diseases such as Influenza AHIN1, the avian flu, etc.,” he stated. “My talk focused on the evaluation of newly acquired fever in ICU patients.”
 

A second guest lecture was delivered by Dr. Asmita Mehta, Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Oncology on the topic of lung infections in solid organ transplant recipients.
 

Amrita faculty members also presented their research work.
 

Respicon 2010Dr. Asmita presented a paper titled “Efficacy of Geftinib in Advanced Non Small Cell Lung Cancer.” This paper won the second prize in the consultant free paper session.
 

Another paper titled “A Rare Cause for Hemoptysis” was presented in the same session by Dr Hari Lakshmanan, Assistant Professor.
 

“The scientific committee of the conference was mostly comprised of the faculty members from Amrita,” stated Dr. Sanjeev Singh. “The scientific content of the conference was well appreciated by delegates.”
 

At the General Body Meeting of the APCCM conducted on the second day, Dr Darsana Viswam, Associate Professor at Amrita, was unanimously nominated as an executive committee member of the APCCM.
