A free computer training cum workshop was conducted for housewives, business persons, retired professionals etc., on July 12, 2018, by Department of Computer Science, School of Arts and Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Mysuru campus, at its premises.
The training program included various utilities of computing technology that surrounds our daily lives. The session on the basics of computers comprised essentials of computer usage, working with computer systems, using Microsoft Office applications for data entry, simple mathematical calculations and data maintenance using MS Excel, usage of drawing applications like MS Paint etc. The session on online ticket booking included online booking of railway, bus and flight tickets. The participants were trained on how to use a browser in a PC or laptop as well as the usage of mobile apps for booking tickets. A session was conducted on online shopping with Flipkart, Amazon and BigBasket, Online Shopping websites, using both browsers as well as mobile applications.
The participants were also trained on how online payment can be done using Paytm, BHIM UPI and net banking. This was followed by a session on the usage of social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter. The participants were informed about the pros and cons of using these platforms. In the next session the participants were exposed to video conferencing tools such as Skype, Google Duo, WhatsApp and they expressed their happiness when they could communicate with their kith and kin at distant places. The final session introduced the participants to various search engines for searching videos, books and information from blogs and online forums.
