We are pleased to announce that Amrita Master of Social Work student Ms. Devi Meenakshi was selected for the prestigious Gandhi Fellowship program on April 21, 2021 for a 23-month term from 2021-2023. The Gandhi Fellowship was born from Mahatma Gandhi’s belief, “Be the change you wish to see in this world”. It is a comprehensive Learning Program engaged in transforming the education ecosystem in government institutions of multiple states in India. Devi Meenakshi is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work with the Specialization of Child Rights and Protection.
As it is quite a rigorous selection process with only 2% of applicants accepted, Ms. Devi is among the brightest minds in the nation. Her fellowship placement is in Rajasthan at the State Transformation Program initiated by the Piramal Foundation for Education Leadership. The Program aims to build a skilled teacher workforce equipped to deliver 21st century skills through re-engineering processes, building people systems, strengthening litigation and facilitating leadership capabilities. The Fellowship, an initiative of Piramal Foundation, is a platform established in 2008 for self-motivated Indian youth with a dream of seeing a thriving India. By discovering and building on the leader within, the Fellow will drive transformation in India as a nation-builder who ensures that no one is left behind. The Fellow will be a committed citizen who plays a key role in creating a thriving India.
The two-year Gandhi Fellowship journey provides customised learning paths for diverse groups of Fellows and equips them with the leadership skills to create positive, large-scale and lasting change in society by solving pressing social problems. While implementing the education initiatives, Fellows undergo personal transformation of improved self awareness and develop strong leadership skills.
Since its inception, Gandhi Fellows have been living the motto of “Build Self, Build Nation” as they inspire thousands of self-motivated youth across India to follow the less trodden path of this experiential residential 2-year fellowship. It is hoped that Gandhi Fellows will become “The New Millionaire” as they go on to impact a million lives in 10 years.
The fellowship honorarium offered to Ms. Devi is 14,500 per month, and she will be eligible for applying for the Social Incubation and Enterprise program after completing the Gandhi Fellowship program. By engaging in this Fellowship, Ms. Devi will be supported in self-transformation and gain the experience, knowledge and skills to design innovative, sustainable solutions to create social impact at scale and to take on the task of India’s development.
