Amrita in Top Category as per MHRD Review Report

A review report of the Ministry of Human Resources Development listed Amrita in the top category of all Indian universities.

The report, prepared by a high power committee constituted by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, as per the directives of the Supreme Court of India, was based on a thorough survey of all 130 deemed-to-be universities in India.

“As a result of our overall assessment, we find that the existing deemed universities fall into three groups,” the committee members wrote in the report. The three groups, respectively A, B and C, were divided as explained below.

  1. Those institutions which, on an aggregate of their achievements and performance as well potential, justify their continuation as deemed universities.
  2. Those, which on an aggregate, were found to be deficient in some aspects which need to be rectified over a three-year period for them to transit into the first category referred here, for their continuation as deemed universities.
  3. Those institutions, deemed-to-be universities which, neither based on past performance nor on their promise for the future, have the attributes, in our considered opinion, to retain their status as universities.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, together with 37 other institutions in the nation, was placed in the top category. Other universities in the same category included IISc Bangalore, TIFR Mumbai, IIFT New Delhi, BITS Pilani and IIIT Hyderabad.

MHRD“It is a proud moment for all of us at Amrita,’ stated Pro-Chancellor, Br. Abhayamrita Chaitanya. “It is also a great responsibility on every stake-holder at Amrita to live up to this reputation. Let us all rise up as one to uphold this reputation.”

“The fact that this study, unlike studies carried out by popular newspapers and magazines of the country like India Today, Times of India, Outlook etc., was conducted by a very highly reputed team of academicians, adds to its credibility,” he elaborated.

Led by Dr. P.N. Tandon of AIIMS, New Delhi, the five-member review committee also had Dr. Goverdhan Mehta, ex-Director of IISc, Dr. M. Anandakrishnan, Chairman of IIT Kanpur and ex-VC of Anna University and Dr. Mrinal Miri, Vice Chancellor of Central University of NEHU.

“It may be noticed that there are only 11 private universities all over the country which have been graded as A,” also remarked the Pro-Chancellor.

And finally, “It is totally due to Amma’s blessings that we achieved this stature. Of course, the hard work and full cooperation of the faculty, students and all others at Amrita added value.”
