Gulnora (45), an Uzbekistan citizen who underwent hand transplant surgery at Amrita Hospital in Kochi, completed a month-long treatment and cheerfully returned to her homeland. She had lost her hands in an accident that occurred at the workplace.
She received limbs harvested from Anita, a native of Nagercoil, who was declared brain dead at KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, on September 21, 2022. Her hands were airlifted to Kochi, and the doctors at Amrita Hospital successfully attached them to Gulnora’s in a 16-hour surgery.
This is the 12th successful hand transplant at Amrita Hospital. Gulnora will be able to move her hands completely after undergoing follow-up treatments, including physiotherapy.
Group Medical Director of Amrita Hospitals Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Administrator Dr. Pratapan Nair, Head of Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Dr. Subramania Iyer, Dr. Jimmy Mathew, Dr. Anil Mathew and Brahmacharini Rehana took part in a cake-cutting function organised at the hospital.
