Dr. Maneesha V. Ramesh, (Dean of International Programs and Director of Amrita Center for Wireless Networks (AmritaWNA) and Applications at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham) met with UNESCO’s Dr. Kristof Vandenberghe (Secretary of the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP)) and Dr. Soichiro Yashukawa and Dr. Masaya Sasaki (Programme Specialists on Disaster Risk Reduction), during her invited visit to UNESCO headquarters at Paris as the first group of 58 signatories of the Kyoto 2020 Commitment for Global Promotion of Understanding and Reducing Landslide Disaster Risk (KLC2020), signed at UNESCO Headquarters at Paris on September 18, 2019.
With Amrita’s work in context, she had a discussion on Disaster Risk Reduction activities, research and technological solutions. Amrita has partnership with many international organizations and is a world center for excellence on landslide risk reduction having deployed two real-time warning systems in India. Also, Flood Evac app developed by AmritaWNA was used to save several lives during last year’s and recent Kerala floods.
