Bio

Dr. Ramkrishnan R. currently serves as Assistant Professor (Sr. Gr.) at the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore. He is specialized in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and obtained his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, in 2020. Dr. Ramkrishnan is a young and fervent researcher, and have published several research papers in highly reputed international journals and conferences, apart from being a reviewer of several international journals. He has handled three sponsored research projects so far, and have patented a novel idea to control beach erosion. He joined Amrita in 2014 after completing his M. Tech. from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, SRM University, Chennai, where he worked on sustainable and environmental friendly soil stabilization methods involving microbial precipitation and natural fibre incorporation in soil. His current research focus is on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, Seismic Hazard Assessment, Slope stability, Sustainable ground improvement and Beach erosion control.

Projects and Consultancies

Innovation in Teaching and Learning

  • 15CVL456: Remote Sensing and GIS
Hands on training on GIS tools like QGIS and GRASSGIS were provided as a part of the course and a term project to quantify the land use dynamics and NDVI of a region of interest was carried out. Students had to select an area of interest and obtain the temporal satellite images, digitize the boundaries, generate FCCs, NDVI and create the land use patterns from the temporal satellite images.
Students were introduced to a hands on application of what they learnt in a pure theory subject, exposed to various GIS tools and applied the same for a civil engineering application.
  • 15CVL303: Geotechnical Engineering
A term project to submit a geotechnical investigation report based on soil investigation carried out anywhere in the campus or area of interest was given as part of continuous assessment. Students had to consider the type of soil investigation carried out, draw the bore-log, provide relatable soil properties for the various strata and recommend a foundation type and/or load calculations.
Students get to apply the basic concepts and other topics they learnt in both 15CVL212 Geology and Soil Mechanics and 15CVL303 Geotechnical Engineering. A good exposure to subsoil investigation, soil types and soil properties alongwith foundation design is covered in the term project.
  • 15CVL303: Geotechnical Engineering
A seminar on any major geotechnical failure/mistake in the past is to be studied, a report made and presented in the class. Site soil properties, foundation design and causes of failure are to be studied and summarized in the report.
Students get an insight into the practical aspects of the minute details and concepts they learnt in the subject. They are also made aware of the ethics in construction and how a small yet major decision can cause a fatal geotechnical failure from the past experiences.
