Bio

Dr. Suman Dutta is an Assistant Professor (Sr. Gd.) at the School of Artificial Intelligence, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore. He completed his Integrated PhD from S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in 2018. His research journey includes postdoctoral positions at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR), and National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR), as well as stints at Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire de Physique (University of Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble), Institut für Theoretische Physik II – Soft Matter (Heinrich-Heine-Universität, Düsseldorf) and the Indian Institute of Sciences (Bengaluru).

In close collaboration with theoreticians and experimentalists, he is investigating emergent collective dynamics and complexities underlying autonomous transport in dense phases of adaptable matter, combining computer simulations, statistical physics, and hybrid machine intelligence.

Research Interest

We use computer simulations (High Performance Computing) and statistical methods to develop and deploy data-driven, yet explainable techniques to systematically investigate complex processes underlying autonomous organization and failure in both living and artificial systems.

Some of its key directions include (but are not limited to):

  • Molecular Information Processing
We decode how molecular systems store, manipulate, and relay information, revealing the principles behind adaptive behaviors in living and synthetic networks.
  • Cellular Migration and Turbulence
We investigate the chaotic patterns of migrating cells to understand their collective dynamics during tissue formation, repair, and failure.
  • Failure and Jamming of Amorphous Systems
We explore how disordered materials transition between fluid-like and rigid states, aiming to predict their resilience and collapse.
  • Predicting Vulnerability and Avalanches
We model critical cascades—such as avalanches or economic societies —to forecast and mitigate systemic failures.
  • Autonomous and Critical Phenomena in Living and Artificial Systems
We study the emergence of self-organized behaviors in systems at critical thresholds to uncover how stability and adaptability coexist.
