Bio

Dr. S. Sudhindran serves as a Professor and Chief Transplant Surgeon in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Solid Organ Transplantation, renowned as the first live donor liver transplant surgeon in Kerala. With over 1,200 liver transplants to his credit, predominantly live donor procedures, Dr. Sudhindran is a leading figure in the field of transplant surgery. His expertise also extends to pancreas and small bowel transplants. Trained in vascular surgery and solid organ transplantation in the UK, he served as a Clinical Fellow in Transplantation at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Dr. S Sudhindran has authored more than 150 publications and was honored with ‘The Distinguished Alumnus Award’ by Trivandrum Medical College in 2020, recognizing his leadership, outstanding service, and significant contributions to society.

  • Co investigator for Qunintiles study protocol number 3074 A1- Randomised double blind study of Tigecycline versus Imipenem cilastatin for intraabdominal abcess.-Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.
  • Randomised controlled trial of early versus late removal of ureteric stents after living donor kidney translantation. A trial currently undergoing in Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences.
  • Non-heart beating donors for renal transplantation. Comparing the primary function rate, rejection rates and short term and long term graft survival rates between cadaveric hear beating and non heart berating donors for kidney transplantation in this unit, especially Category III non heart beating donors.
  • Graft versus Host disease after solid organ transplantation. Investigating the various clinical features, diagnostic methods and treatment options available for this rare but usually fatal complication after transplantation. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of method of assessment of peripheral chimerism for diagnosis of GVHD in this institute is being audited as well.
  • Platelet counts after Pancreatico renal transplantation. A retrospective study focusing on blood platelet counts from patients with combined pancreatico-renal transplants (SPK), who were compared with Type I diabetic patients from the same era undergoing kidney only transplantation (KTA). Platelet counts from SPK has been found to be significantly raised when compared with KTA.
  • Surgical training times. Analysis of the time taken to perform various general surgical procedures between consultants and trainees from prospectively collected data at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Trainees were seen to take an average of 30% more time than consultants (published).
  • Double blind prospective randomised controlled trial of prophylactic buccal suscard in preventing ERCP induced pancreatitis. Trial done in Countess of Chester Hospital to assess the role of buccal suscard, a long acting nitrate (which relaxes the sphincter of Oddi) in reducing the incidence of post ERCP pancreatitis (published).
  • Analysis of EUROSTAR data pertaining to the use of Aortic Stents for abdominal aortic aneurysms, especially with respect to the significance of endoleaks and change in aortic aneurysm diameter (published).
  • Femoro-distal bypass grafting. Audit done in Aintree Hospitals Nhs Trust, Liverpool on the limb salvage and mortality rates of crural vessel bypasses for critical lower limb ischaemia.
  • 30-day mortality and morbidity of carotid endarterectomy in a district general hospital. Retrospective Audit in Leighton hospital, Crewe.
  • Stay-in-rates after day case surgery. Retrospective Audit in Macclesfield District General Hospital.
  • Usage of Blood In General Surgery. Audit In Memorial Hospital, Darlington pertaining to the large number of inappropriate transfusions used in general surgery (published).
  • A comparative study of various surgical techniques for Hydrocoele of the Tunica Vaginalis sac. Thesis submitted to the Kerala University as part of MS Degree in General Surgery.
