About the Host Institute
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary research university that is accredited and ranked amongst the top 1% of universities in India by National Ranking agency (NIRF) and recognized as No.1 Private University in India by THE and QS worldwide ranking agencies. Amrita has over 18000 students, 15 constituent schools, 150+ (undergraduate, graduate and doctoral) programs, more than 20 research centers m engineering, medicine, business, sciences, social work, nanotechnology, sustainable energy and so on.
One of our key missions has been to pioneer socio-techno solutions for sustainable development Over the past decade; The following are to name a few,
A. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has developed and implemented ICT based solutions to provide ‘Quality Education’ to the under-privileged. Today, over 10 million people from diverse backgrounds i.e. vocational trainees, K-12 students, higher education graduates and teachers use Amrita’ s solutions
B. In the area of ‘Clean Water and Sanitation’, Amrita won Gates Foundation Award, to develop technologies to conserve water and bio-treat sanitary wastes. In addition, our research centers have architected low cost, DIY design construction of toilets to help scale the massive needs of toilets in India by helping local communities build them in over 21 states across India.
C. Amrita has been instrumental in empowering over 5000 women in skills based training and holistic development over the past 3 years.
D. The UNDP (UN Global Development Network) has recognized Amrita’ s work as one of the best examples in the world for architecting programs for enabling financial inclusivity of women and Amrita was awarded the ‘UNESCO chair in Gender Equality’ in 2016. The United Nations has officially made Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham India’s first ever UNESCO Chair on gender equality and women’s empowerment. The official bestowing of the UNESCO Chair on the Coimbatore-based university took place in Paris.
E. In 2015, Amrita has also been invited to the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative to showcase the enormous social impact it has made. On 8 July at United Nations Headquarters, the United Nations Academic Impact Initiative (UNAI) and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham co-hosted a one-day conference on “Technology for Sustainable Development”.
Amrita has had active engagements with over 40+ academic and research institutions in Europe from Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. These include Bi-lateral funded research projects by EU in FP6, FP7, Leading coordinating roles for EU projects in India under the Erasmus+ programs for capacity building.

Amma will delivered the keynote address during the conference at the United Nations on technology and sustainable development in New York.
Amma, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amma addressed researchers representing 93 leading international universities at a conference co-hosted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI).
My conviction is that science, technology and spirituality must unite in order to ensure a sustainable and balanced existence of our world.
