Make in India, an industrious initiative by the Government of India, encourages local manufacturing and research in the materials domain. Gaining momentum deems necessary to succeed and compete the market of developed countries that have adopted modern and advanced technologies for the production of engineering components. In this context, collaborative brainstorming sessions of professionals from industry, research institutes, and academia (students, research scholars, and faculty members) would enhance the scientific knowledge and impart awareness on technological advancements in modern manufacturing practices. Besides, the sessions would seed opportunities for new approaches, possible solutions, and collaborations. Coimbatore, being appositely located at the helm of many industries, a course “Metallurgy for Non Metallurgists” is conducted to cater the needs of industry persons. The course would contain lectures, practical sessions, and sessions covering industrial case studies and their solutions using advanced instrumental characterization in strategic areas that span materials & manufacturing, additive manufacturing, simulation, testing and failure analysis.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is a multi campus, multi disciplinary research academia that is accredited ‘A++’ by NAAC and is ranked as one of the best research institutions in India. Amrita is spread across six campuses in three states of India – Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, with the headquarters at Ettimadai, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham continuously collaborates with top US universities including Ivy league universities and top European universities for regular student exchange programs, and has emerged as one of the fastest growing institutions of higher learning in India The institution is managed by the Mata Amritanandamayi Math.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 1994. The department offers B. Tech. program in Mechanical Engineering, M. Tech. programs in Engineering Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Automotive Systems with Ph. D. program in all the specializations.
At present, the department intake capacity is 180 students per year at the B. Tech. level and 30 students each in the M. Tech. programs. The department has competent and committed faculty members drawn from industry, practicing professionals and academicians to enhance the delivery of academic programs. There are about 54 teaching faculty members in the department. Most of them have at least 15 years of experience.
The department has evolved a comprehensive student centric learning approach, designed to add significant value to the learner’s understanding in an integrated manner through workshops, lab sessions, assignments, training, seminars, projects and independent study.
The hands on training offered by our CAD/CAM laboratory in latest design and analysis software bring in a formal method of familiarizing with the industrial practices helps the students to apply their class room knowledge to live industrial problems. The department is equipped with ten laboratories, nine workshops and seven research laboratories. The laboratories and computing facilities are made available to the students and staff until late night and on all working days.
Materials Processing Lab Friction Stir Welding Lab Materials processing lab was established at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in the year 2017. The lab has advanced facilities for processing of materials at high temperature, high vacuum, and high vacuum & high temperature conditions. In the due course of establishment, the lab received research grants from Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) – Government of India, Department of Science and Technology (DST) – Government of India, and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
Friction Stir Welding Lab was established with the Internal Seed Grant from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in the year 2017. The lab has a friction stir welding setup that enables Friction Stir Welding, Friction Stir Processing, Friction Stir Spot Welding, Rotary Friction Welding, Modified Friction Stir Clinching process, and Friction Surfacing of metallic materials. The equipment facilitated publications in high quality research articles in various international journals (SCIE, ESCI indexed). Besides, the articles from the lab are cited by researchers from world renowned institutes & research labs, and institutions of national importance.
