LAKSHYA, Sanskrit for goal, is the student association for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It was inaugurated on September 1, 2005, after students sought Chancellor Amma’s permission and blessings.
The Association seeks to provide students members with a strong foundation on which they can build successful careers in engineering and allied fields. Students are taught to not only seek excellence in their areas of interest, but also be willing to extend selfless assistance to society.
The Association has been a forum for students to successfully group together in order to discuss, debate and share dialogue, enabling them to create knowledge, technologies and ideas. It has motivated, inspired and encouraged students to put forth their best efforts.
Students members have participated in technical fests around the country, winning top honors for their alma mater. At the tech fest “Shaastra 2009” conducted at IIT Madras, students of mechanical engineering, Praveen R. and Aditya, won the 3rd prize in “Industry Defined Problem Solving.”
At “Tathva 2009′ conducted by NIT Calicut, 3rd year students Arun Prabakar, Arun Sudakar, Sreedu Krishnan, won the first prize in “Techno-Management”. Their peers, Shyam Sekhar, Sambasivan A. P. and Anoop A. Pillai, won the second prize in “Steam Boat Challenge”.
The Association has an executive council that takes decisions on important matters. It is guided by a fixed set of rules and regulations that assists in its smooth functioning. Contacts are established and maintained with students of mechanical engineering at other colleges.
The Association ultimately plans to implement projects that will aim to improve societal living conditions.

Amrita Team introduced Indias first indegineoulsy developed universal measuring machine during Imtex Exhibition, Bangalore. They build this machine within Rs.10 lakhs ( DST & Amrita funded) which normally cost more than Rs 1 crore if we buy from foreign countries. Amma was the inspiration behind this as she said to develop this instrument on our own instead of buying from foreign countries. The project was lead by Dr. Ganesha Udupa, Professor, Dept, of ME, Amritapuri.
A team of 7 aero modelling enthusiasts (ME & ECE Dept) from the Phoenix Club, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, had participated in the SAE India Aero design challenge 2021 under the mentorship of Mr. Ashish Mohan. The team secured the first position across India under the category of Best Application report. The team participated in the regular class event of the competition which required the team to design a fixed wing UAV under 5 kilograms and carry the maximum amount of payload. A UAV was designed with a weight of 4.7kg with the capability to lift a payload of up to 5.5kg. Some other requirements of the competition were to form an application report highlighting a practical use case scenario for the design made and a fabrication report of any one component used inside a UAV. The application proposed for the design was a UAV that can be used for the Early detection and tracking of forest fires whereas the fabrication report was made regarding the manufacturing process of a BLDC motor. The team presented the design and the various reports before a panel of aviation experts and was awarded the best application report.
