Course Outline

Unit 1

Research – A form of Exploration

Purpose of writing – Identification of a research problem and the choice of subject – Types of research-Selecting sources-Bibliography-Plagiarism.

Unit 2

The Mechanics of Writing

Spelling, Punctuation, Italics, Numbers, Title of work, Quotations. Format and documentation of research paper.

Unit 3

Documentation

Works cited – Citing works, Essays, Articles, Newspapers, Journals, Internet – sources.

Unit 4

Analysis of research writings

Analysis of specimen research writings. Motivate students for critical thinking.

Unit 5

Practicing writing research papers on various topics.

Objectives

To initiate scientific approach to research in language and literature; to introduce the students to the methods of scrupulous writing and careful documentation of research; to provide the students information about writing processes in research.
