Syllabus

Unit I

Introduction to Photojournalism

Definition, history, and ethics of photojournalism. The role of photojournalism in visual media.

Unit II

Visual Storytelling

Composition and framing techniques. Capturing emotions and moments. Lighting and exposure for impactful visuals. Storytelling through photo sequences.

Unit III

Technical Skills for Photojournalism

Advanced focusing techniques. Shooting in different lighting conditions. Basic photo editing for journalists.

Unit IV

News photography: Spot news, planned events, breaking news. Feature photography: In-depth exploration of social issues. Documentary photography. Wildlife photography. Sports photography: covering sports events.

Unit V

Professional Practices

Pre-production planning and research. Capturing images in the field: Safety and ethical considerations. Caption writing and image editing for publication. Presentation of work which in a professional manner for publication or exhibition.

Objectives and Outcomes

Objective:

This course equips students with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to become effective photojournalists. Through a combination of classroom tutorials, practical assignments, and critiques, students will learn the technical aspects of photography, ethical considerations, storytelling techniques, creative caption making, type of photojournalism, and the role photojournalism plays in visual media.

Course Outcome (CO):

CO1: Recall fundamental principles and ethical guidelines of photojournalism, including accuracy, objectivity, and respect for subjects and their context.

CO2: Understand the role of photojournalism in society, its historical significance, type of photojournalism and its impact on shaping public opinion and awareness.

CO3: Apply technical skills in photography, including camera operation, composition, and lighting, to capture impactful and newsworthy images with caption that effectively communicate journalistic stories and themes.

CO4: Analyze photographic images and visual narratives in terms of their journalistic value, aesthetic appeal, and ethical implications, identifying key elements and storytelling techniques employed.

CO5: Evaluate their own photojournalistic work and that of their peers, assessing the effectiveness of visual storytelling, adherence to ethical standards, and alignment with journalistic principles and practices.

CO6: Produce a portfolio of photojournalistic images and visual stories demonstrating their ability to capture significant moments, convey meaningful narratives, and engage audiences through compelling visual storytelling.
